Christmas Eve

I thought my heart would burst with joy and sorrow as I heard the Word and looked out at the people.

I felt joy—so full and free—with the retelling of the birth of Jesus, the One who came for all.  I saw sorrow etched on the faces of those grieving or struggling, their personal pain highlighted by the holiday.  I thought of God’s great love for each one, his yearning to bring solace and peace and healing to our wounded and sin-sick souls.

And then the candles were raised and the light soared up, held by holy hands of praise.  That simple gesture done in unity fused joy and sorrow into a sacred benediction.  God is with us.
